Murals

The team at Hugge in Paphos, Cyprus wanted to encourage mingling near the water cooler and coffee stop in the co-working space. I was commissioned to design something to get the ideas flowing. What better than the spiritual balance of coffee and ideas?

“Sam did 3 big murals for us at Hügge coworking and we absolutely love 'em all. His ability to create cool artwork from a brief conversation and a few keywords is truly amazing. Really hope to see him in Cyprus again - we got a lot more walls 😉”

The coworking space in Cyprus Hugge needed to bring some greenery into the space. I brought a whole makeshift studio space worth of assorted objects to store potplants in.

This design gives the regular users of the space a fresh take each time they walk by. There’s always a new vessel to spot, to try to see a new one becomes a game. This way the space doesn’t get old.

There are also events and presentations hosted in the room or people playing playstation. So sometimes you’ll get distracted, or bored, and instead of looking at a phonescreen you can rest your eyes and soak up some greenery.

The basement brainstorm room at Hugge Co-Working space needed a visual that could lead collaborators to new ideas. I was commissioned to bring the concept to life in this hip young co-working space in sunny Cyprus.

Take a peek at the fun activities they hold after hours on their Instagram @hugge.coworking

The friendly carpark brand in Antwerp Citibee commissioned me to bring some more vibrant life into their parking garage using the compani’s colour scheme. We kept with the bee theme and brought this bunch of vibrant flowers into the space.

The space at Zennon Wellness center in Belgium wouldn't have been complete without some centering yoga inspirational artwork.
We combined the deep heritage of the on-site coffee roastery with the vibrant colours of the creative yoga classes held here.
The center also has rooms so you can come, relax, work on finding yourself and calming your mind.

I loved working on this small residential mural for an entertainment area.

Antwerp Port Authority commissioned about 90 artists to paint a 1km long wall with nautical themed mural pieces. It was during the peak of a Belgian summer heatwave, the locals were getting scorched but as an Aussie I felt right at home painting in the heat like this :)

This vibrant mural welcomed newcomers into the trendy fashion palace in Hasselt Belgium. The bright colours and black n white contrasting colours perfectly accented the strong pastels and neutrals from the retail space’s inventory.

This local school in Sydney wanted to add some flair to their science block and pay a tribute to the local fauna. The Picnic Point High School commissioned this mural to give a nod to the Green and Gold Bell frog that lives in the creeks behind the school .

Alpha Highend is an audiophile’s delight based in Brussels Belgium. The eccentric owner of the space here has a deep passion for music and commissioned this tsunami of sound. We worked on a design that showed the spectrum of emotions that music. He has a love for the sounds of the American greats too so we designed a mural for his American passions too. I enjoyed remixing his audio logo into the large colourful canvas for display inside the store.

The amazing team at Expedia invited me into their courtyard at the Bali offices to work on this HUGE mural for them. It was by far the hardest wall to date, scorching sun, steamy humidity, rain, squirming through the bushes, language barriers, limited local paint supplies, dehydration and of course the dreaded Bali Belly too.

I’m so so proud of the work that came together to create this piece. The clients were so amazing and full of great suggestions for how we solve the problem together.
It was my first international mural and I fulfilled a years long mission I’ve had to be painting around the world.

My amazing girlfriend Ala helped me out so much on this one.
I couldn't believe how much I struggle in the heat during this painting.

”First of all can I just say it all looks BEAUTIFUL – really thoughtful and creative and inspiring. Totally unlike anything Expedia has ever delivered before. Bravo, hat’s off to you!” Sharon, Expedia

A coffee machine repair shop in Sydney commissioned a mural for their showroom. The Toby’s Estate coffee school and repair shop allowed me to blast apart one of their flagship machines, the Victoria Arduino Black Eagle model to show newcomers to the space how intricate the inner workings of the machinery can be. It was a pleasure to work so closely with the smell of coffee from the upstairs barista workshops and having a constant supply of freshly made Toby’s Estate coffees during the painting days.

I was commissioned to prepare murals for two whole levels of the Singapore Expedia offices. The aim was to celebrate the diverse festivals held on the island nation as well as bringing in the lush tropical plant life into the sleek modern designed offices.

The team at Pony Design Co. contacted me to come up with a new take on their decades old character Henry the cockatoo for the kids bistro area of the Southern Cross Club Canberra in Woden.

The new space is featured in the Canberra Times .

Asse in Belgium is home to a huge amount of hops production. The local council collaborated with Treepack and myself to paint this wave of hops and beer at the local skatepark.

While exploring the streets of Ubud in Bali I met another artist painting a wall by the name of @anagard_stcl . We caught up again the next day and I painted this semi abstract coctail glass beside his chicken warrior.

The Conservatorium cafe within the new NRMA headquarters in Homebush Olympic Park contacted me to create a botanical graphic to match the soft interior of their cafe designed by Davenport Campbell interior desingers. Together we came up with a solution which encompassed the intricate fantatastical floral elements and native flora too.
I chose a pastel palette to create a sort of hidden garden within the bustling cafe environment.

The owner of this new trendy cafe in Gladesville called me up to design a mural for his new two storey cafe, literally, two doors down from his other cafe.
His vision for Gladesville cafés was something grander, something more luxe than his other venue. Working on this vision was a dream.

We came up with the idea of a coffee estate, sort of a villa looking out onto the fields in the hills and having plant life bustling though the windows.
The same design snakes and winds its way up the stairs and into the upper dining level.

Painting this in the heat wave in Sydney in 42ºC without fans or lights or AC during summer was pretty challenging, but I’m really proud of the outcome with this one.
The words of praise from Elie and his customers’ was humbling when I returned a few months later to see how his cafe made an impact on the locals.
Many of them were surprised and delighted to see a cafe of this calibre in Gladesville.

This was such a huge job, and having to step up beyond using a ladder was a real treat too.
I called in a few other local dudes to collaborate with on this one too they’re all amazing painters in their own right so it was so much fun to paint with them all. Big thanks to Birdhat , Ears, Phibs and Ink Hunter.
The crew at Titan Cranes wanted to splash in and give the workers in the yard something to really enjoy on a daily basis. The items in the windows and all the small little buildings are relevant to the guys. I took suggestions from them via a whiteboard during the painting process and got some really good responses from the team.

I was working with Davenport-Campbell to deliver some interior office designs which incorporated the style and themes of the local Canberra environment.
I created this 80m long wrapping design to add some patterned banksias in this freshly completed office design. The colours of the space were used in my design to tie all the visuals together like a forest.

Tap Cafe in Sydney commissioned me to paint this bright rainbow mural from the 2015 Specialty Coffee Assosiation America flavour wheel. I pulled in the great Scott Nagy to give me a hand painting up this intricate piece.  It was a really successful collaboration between the space, the team and the final result is fantastic.

The process of growing beans through to pouring the hot coffee in your cup often goes unseen.  Janeks Cafe in the NSW South Coast town of Bowral commissioned me to paint an illustrative journey to show their customers the care and knowledge that goes into making the perfect cup of coffee.

This MC Escher inspired collaboration was a great project to work on.  I pulled in a bunch of great artists from the Local Artists Division arts collective that I am a part of.  Apeseven, Rilla, Cam Wall, Grizzle, and Keo match made this a fun crew to work with while wrinkling our heads with the warped perspectives and intersecting sections.

Live Art demo for a private screening of the new Atomic Blonde film by Universal.
The legends at The Event Department hired me to engage the crowd of 600 as they walked into the Event Cinema at Bondi Junction.

Thanks to the legends at Betty Wants In from Melbourne for putting this fun project together. I had a blast creating this moving mural project with them. Thanks to the generous Work-Shop crew for letting us borrow some of their wall space to set up and play.

Here's a link to the video on the Slurpee Australia Facebook page to see the time-lapse pour out the artwork.

I worked with Bill Hope a friendly and very talented illustrator on this magical mural for an underground bar in Sydney. We created a dark mystic scene to celebrate the supernatural theme for this location and its interior design.

A space explorer I painted for an event.  The custom wall was painted to bring some street art into the space.  So I painted this bright, colourful, shiny space explorer.

Mural for a house interior in Waterloo, Sydney.

Custom summer street art mural for Sydney's Name This Bar.

Keith Haring styled mural for Original Mineral, Oxford St Paddington.

Mural inside Black Penny Bar and Gallery, in Surry Hills in Sydney.

I was very happy to come on board and help out the team Davenport Campbell in their experimental design process to create whole new office layout design.
The team from Puzzle Partners brought me in to paint the walls and create a space for all the values of Mirvac to shine through.

Down in Melbourne in a laneway is this piece by Le Griz and myself. We tried to think of what a series of trippy babushka dolls would look like in our combines styles.
The procession leads towards the entrance to their studio space.

Purple haze mural in Sydney's Project 8 cafe.

Featured in Art On the Wall book of international Street Artists, published by Dopress Books 2014.

This bright bull was painted in Sydney's Work-Shop.

Coffee mug loves skim milk!

Mural Illustrating the difficulty to change one's identity.  Painted at Sydney's Work-Shop.

A few of us from the Local Artist Division collective got together in Newtown during one of their amazing street festivals. We were tasked with giving this pop up wall in the Oporto carpark a fresh lick of paint.
The collaborations with these legends are always a heap of fun.
